Kwanzaa

The festival of Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Karenja. It was created so African
Americans could learn about African culture as well as remember and celebrate their
history. One of the most important elements of the celebration is the acknowledgment of
the seven principals: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective
work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba
(creativity), and Imani (faith).
